How Should You Care for Your Skin After Workouts?
Now that the warmer seasons and months of allergies are here, we’re gearing up to protect our skin from the onslaught of higher temperatures, increased humidity, and longer sun exposure—in addition to pollen and other irritants in the air. This is also the time when many people who took a break from exercising to “hibernate” during the colder part of the year are motivated to get outside and start being more active again. With this in mind, many of our patients notice that they achieve their body goals much faster by combining strength training, cardio, and stretches with body contouring treatments like CoolSculpting® at our New Jersey office.
Though we already know how exercise benefits our general health, many don’t realize that it is actually great for your skin as well—for a multitude of reasons. Going to the gym or doing at-home workouts can help to relieve the stress that contributes to acne breakouts, improve blood circulation, and allow the skin to flush out impurities when you sweat.
Unfortunately, there’s also a catch: Don’t forget that while an active lifestyle is helpful for your complexion, leaving a buildup of all of that sweat and grime on your face after a good workout session can lead to worse skin problems.
Follow these tips for keeping your skin clean and balanced if you’re working out regularly:
Never Forget to Wash Your Face
Even if you feel tired, don’t forget to wash away the excess bacteria, oil, and sweat that stick to the skin’s surface after your workouts. Debris can get clogged in your pores if you don’t remove it, leading to acne flare-ups. You can use plain water or a gentle cleanser, but make a point of washing as soon as your workout is over. Avoid harsh chemicals and very hot water, both of which strip your skin of beneficial oils.
Avoid Touching Your Skin
Gyms are generally full of germs, so the last thing you want to do is touch your face right after using the treadmill or other equipment. Doing so can spread bacteria. Tie your hair back before you start exercising, and remember to wash your hands as soon as you’re done.
