Fall and Winter Skincare Tips

With the holiday season ahead, it’s time to change up your summer skincare routine—if you haven’t already. Some people use the same products day after day, regardless of the time of year. This approach keeps your skin from getting the full benefit of topicals and more chosen specifically to meet your skin’s needs based on humidity, temperature, and more. With that in mind, here are some seasonal skincare tips from South Jersey Skin Care.

One of the most important things to remember about the colder months is that it is very easy for your skin to dry out! It’s easy to think of summer, with its punishing sun and heat, as the time when your skin may be in danger of losing hydration. Fall and winter can actually be very dry in terms of humidity—even despite the morning mist, rain, or snow. Couple this with dry circulating air indoors, where you spend more time, and you definitely need to pay attention to hydration and moisturization.

Most importantly, be sure you are drinking plentiful water throughout the day. Great skincare starts on the inside, no matter the season.

Remember, too, that hot showers strip your skin of oils that help to keep it hydrated. Switch to warm, shorter showers—which are not as luxurious in the cooler times of year, but do preserve your skin’s health and appearance better.

After that shower, be sure to apply a thick moisturizer, preferably with ceramides. This can help to lock in hydration, especially in ways that thinner moisturizers from your summer regimen aren’t designed to do as well.

Another thing you can do to keep your skin happy is use a humidifier indoors. Are you seeing a theme? Hydration, hydration, hydration! You can also use a hydrating cleanser, so you’re getting rid of facial oils and debris while also ensuring your skin keeps that hard-earned moisture.

Finally, don’t let cloud cover fool you. Ultraviolet rays from the sun penetrate through clouds, causing damage to your skin even in autumn and after. Be sure to keep applying sunscreen when you go outdoors. This is for your appearance, as well as your health. UV damage doesn’t take the fall or winter off!
