Why Doesn’t Microneedling Cause Scars?
When your body gets a wound, it often creates a scar. So how does microneedling not only avoid scarring, but actually improve the look and health of the skin? When it comes to microneedling, the South Jersey Skin Care team explains that the treatment uses some precision technology to harness the best aspects of the skin’s healing processes without leaving a lasting mark.
In fact, microneedling can even be used to reduce the appearance of certain scars, such as acne scars!

Microneedling is also known as a “collagen induction” treatment, because it induces—or prompts—cells called fibroblasts to engage new collagen production. As the protein becomes more abundant in the skin, its presence can counter the visible effects of aging and environmental damage. A healthy amount of the protein helps the skin’s surface to appear plumper, fuller, and smoother.
The treatment works by creating very, very tiny openings in the skin. This is a controlled process, and the needles are remarkably fine. They are so fine, the “wounds” they create do not reach the size threshold necessary to trigger scar formation. Depth also has something to do with it, as the needles penetrate deep enough to stimulate fibroblast activity and kickstart the skin-renewal process, but not so deep that the resulting wounds remain visible. Again, precision and control are key.
The collagen production works along with increased elastin production and improved circulation to close the microneedling-induced wounds without a trace. The newly made beneficial proteins also enhance the overall treatment area’s natural beauty.
As noted above, this treatment can also help to minimize existing scars. Since the whole goal is new collagen production, applying microneedling to specific scar tissue can “break it up” for a second chance at repair. The body’s typical response to a larger wound is simply to close the opening—not to make it look pretty. Thus, the collagen fibers of a scar may stand out against the backdrop of the surrounding skin.
Microneedling this tissue essentially gives the skin a “do-over,” with the numerous tiny wound repairs combining to create a more uniform look and a less-noticeable scar.
